It is with great joy that I write to say thank you for the warm welcome you have extended to me as the next President of Shimer College. Those of you I have met--and those of you I look forward to meeting--have made real the many ways that Shimer asks enduring questions, creates intellectual citizens, and lives out what Hutchins called “the great conversation” with humor and rigor. Frances Wood Shimer and Cinderella Gregory crossed from one frontier to another in the mid-19th century when they moved from upstate New York to Mount Carroll to pursue something they believed in; Shimer took up the challenge to move forward in the 1970s by moving to Waukegan and, earlier this century, to Chicago. In joining the great adventure that is Shimer, I look forward to joining together to leaven the world around us through the work--and the play--of education and ideas.
