Robert Keohane
, Search Committee Chair & Board Representative
 
Robert Keohane is the son of two former Shimer professors, an early entrant, and a 1961 graduate of Shimer. He is currently a professor of International Relations at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He earned his Master’s and Ph.D. from Harvard University and has previously taught at Swarthmore College, Stanford University, Brandeis University, Harvard University, and Duke University. Robert is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Political and Social Science and American Philosophical Society.

B David Galt, Executive Secretary & Staff Representative

B David Galt is Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Services/Dean of Students at Shimer College and has been with the College since 2010.  He earned his Bachelor of Science from Bemidji State University (MN) and Master of Arts in Higher Education: Student Affairs (HESA) from Bowling Green State University (OH).  He has diverse student & multicultural affairs experience within higher education, as well as experience working in other non-profit organizations and other consulting work.

Edie Barschi, Board Representative

Edie Barschi was an early entrant who graduated Shimer College in 1975. She attended New York University at night and earned an MBA in Finance and International Business in 1981. Edie worked on Wall Street for 14 years ending her career at Drexel Burnham Lambert where she was an Institutional Investor All Star Analyst in the Domestic Oil category. Her husband, Robert, and she retired and moved to Berkeley, CA in 1990. 15 years ago she became a private financial consultant and planner. Ms. Barschi is a Chartered Financial Analyst(tm), a Certified Financial Planner(tm), and an Enrolled Agent.

Philip Farina,
Board Representative

Philip Farina graduated from Shimer College in 1973. He earned his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1976 and practices law in Chicago, concentrating in litigation. He is Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Shimer College and Chair of the Educational Affairs Committee.


Peter Hanig, Board Representative

Peter Hanig and his wife Alice are 1971 graduates of Shimer. Peter has previous served on the Board of Trustees and is currently the President of Hanig’s Footwear, which has six stores in the Chicagoland area. He has deep ties within the Chicago business, arts, and philanthropic communities. Peter is a past board member for the Chicago Convention and Tourism Board and the National Shoe Retailers Association, and he is currently a board member of the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association and the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs in Chicago.

Robert Kruse, Weekend Program Student Representative

Robert Kruse is currently a student in the weekend program at Shimer College, scheduled to graduate in June of 2012.  This is a second Bachelor’s degree; the first is a BS in accounting.  He supports his education habit as the Chief Deputy Assessor of Cook County Illinois.  He has a number of professional designations relevant to that industry.  He is very active civically and politically in the City and the State.


Stuart Patterson
, Faculty Representative

Stuart Patterson is an Associate Professor of the Liberal Arts. Patterson joined the Shimer Faculty in 2004, before which he taught in Washington, D.C. in the Academic Studies Program at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. He has taught every course in Shimer’s core curriculum, earning him the title “Master of the Shimer Curriculum” in the fall of 2009.  In addition to serving as Shimer’s liaison to many Chicago cultural institutions, Patterson has served twice as the Director of the Shimer in Oxford Program and in numerous capacities in Shimer’s Student Life program. His primary academic training has been in American cultural history, especially of the New Deal era. He has developed courses at Shimer in the history of economic thought, cultural geography, and the visual arts (history and studio techniques).

Alex Rosenberg, Weekday Program Student Representative

Alexandra Rosenberg is a third-year Shimer student concentrating in the Humanities. Before Shimer she worked for the Sun-Sentinel Miami newspaper as a high school theatre critic. Most of her time is spent reading for class and volunteering at HIV/AIDS awareness clinics. Her long term plans include a Masters in Publishing and a future career at Hackett Publishing.

David Shiner, Faculty Representative

David Shiner has been a member of the Shimer faculty since 1977 and a member of the staff since 1976. A philosopher by training, he has taught all 16 courses in Shimer's core curriculum, for which he was awarded special recognition by the College in 1998.  David has held a number of administrative positions at Shimer, serving three stints as Academic Dean.  He has written on a number of topics and is a member of the American Philosophical Association.

Rebecca Sundin
, Board Representative

Rebecca Sundin (class of 1999) came to Shimer in 1996 seeking to supplement her education after obtaining a B.A. in History from the University of Illinois.  She is currently the Customer Relations Manager at Americaneagle.com.  She has worked at American eagle for 11 years as it has grown from a small office into an industry leader in website design and hosting.  Rebecca has also studied at the University of Chicago where she received her Masters of Arts in Humanities.  She is currently a J.D. candidate at Chicago-Kent College of Law.
