Two forums were held to update the campus community and alumni about the progress of the Presidential Search. Dr. Robert Keohane, Chair of the Search Committee, hosted both with other available members of the Search Committee in attendance.

Dr. Keohane reviewed the committee's work to-date which included information about identification of a group of semi-finalists who were videoconference interviewed in early November by a three member sub-set of the full committee. He shared the list of questions that all semi-finalists were asked during the videoconferences and provided general observations about the experience, qualities, and characteristics we are seeking in the next President of Shimer College. Questions from the audience about next steps in the process and campus and alumni involvement in campus interviews with finalists (scheduled for late January 2012) were entertained. Both the campus community and alumni will be invited to play an active role in campus interviews with their feedback sought and considered in the selection process. Once finalists have been selected and their candidacy made public, information about their campus interview schedule and curriculum vitae will also be made available.

The Search Committee meet on Saturday, November 19th. The next step in the process will be videoconferences with the full committee on Saturday, December 17th. A decision about finalists who will be invited to campus for two-day interviews in January will be made shortly thereafter.

The list of questions asked during the first round of videoconference interviews is available here.

From postings and advertisements (particularly our ad in the Chronicle of Higher Education), nominations, and other efforts of the Presidential Search Committee,  we developed a candidate pool of approximately 75 applications by the priority consideration deadline of September 15.  The Search Committee identified 23 candidates that most closely met the qualifications we are seeking and who might meet our needs in a next President.

At our meetings on September 16-17, after thorough review and discussion, 12-14 candidates were chosen for immediate further consideration.  These candidates have been contacted and asked to reaffirm their interest in the position and to provide authorization to check with provided references and others about their professional experience and other activities.  Candidates were also advised of Shimer's salary range for the presidential position as well as asked to affirm their understanding and support of Shimer's collaborative shared governance model.  The Committee also recommended the use of a search consultant in a limited and cost-effective way to assist with candidate background investigation.  After completion of reference checks, candidates who remain in consideration will be interviewed via videoconference by sub-committees of the Search Committee.

Applications will continue to be accepted until October 15, 2011 and reviewed as received.  No additional applications will be accepted after October 15.

The full Search Committee will meet on November 19, 2011 and will determine semi-finalists who will advance to the next step in the process, ultimately leading to campus interviews at Shimer in January 2012.   We expect to recommend a candidate to the Board of Trustees at its February meeting and continue to work to have the next president take office in July 2012.
