Nicknamed The Artifact Hunter, Eugene is a native of southern Illinois who has has been finding and collecting Indian artifacts since he was a child. Today, his collection includes several thousand pieces. Eugene’s knowledge about archaeology comes from sharing his finds with archaeologists from various universities and contract archaeologists working in the
Downstate region, as well as his friend, Native American and archaeology consultant Leo Thompson (Iron Bear Wolf).
His nickname, The Artifact Hunter, came during a meeting of deer hunters who were drawing straws for deer stands on a friend’s farm. The friend said to the deer hunters, “This is Gene Baldwin; you’ll see him in the creek hunting for arrowheads. Don’t shoot the artifact hunter.” Gene has yet to be shot.
