This free one-day workshop for certified high school teachers, sponsored by the IIT Global Scholars Program, will introduce materials and methods for engaging students in cross-disciplinary questions that relate STEM subjects to issues in humanities and social studies. The workshop is aligned with CPS Framework for Teaching (see below).
High school teachers will be given first-hand experience at using discussion-based pedagogy, primary source texts, and creative, interdisciplinary questioning to motivate learning. Participants will participate in sample discussion classes using historical texts that cover topics including the nature of learning, the social aspects of changing technologies, the creation of artificial life, and the design and applications of nuclear fission in peace and war. Participating teachers will also attend the closing ceremony of the IIT Global Leaders Summer Program and presentations by students of their “Serving Through STEM” projects.
All course materials, including readings, will be supplied in advance of the workshop. Lunch will be provided. Course materials and lunch are free of charge.
