This free two-day workshop for certified high school teachers, sponsored by the IIT Boeing Academy, will introduce materials and methods for engaging students in cross-disciplinary questions that relate STEM subjects to issues in humanities and social studies. The workshop is aligned with CPS Framework for Teaching (see below).

High school teachers will be given first-hand experience at using discussion-based pedagogy, primary source texts, and creative, interdisciplinary questioning to motivate learning. Teachers will participate in sample discussion classes using historical texts that cover topics including the nature of learning, the social aspects of changing technologies, the creation of artificial life, and the design and applications of nuclear fission in peace and war. Teachers will also have an opportunity to visit a class in the summer program of the IIT Boeing Scholars Academy.

All course materials, including readings, will be supplied in advance of the workshop. Lunch will be provided on both workshop days. Course materials and lunch are free of charge.

Workshop leaders:

  • Dr. Stuart Patterson, Associate Professor of Liberal Arts at Shimer College, Chicago
  • Dr. Halcyon Lawrence, Assistant Visiting Professor Linguistics and Technical Communication, Illinois Institute of Technology
