Why did you choose Shimer?
I chose Shimer because of the Great Books curriculum and the small discussion classes. Shimer was so different from what I had done in high school. I love to read and Shimer seemed like a positive alternative to a lecture-class situation which bores me. I was intrigued by the Shimer questionnaire which consisted, at the time, mainly of questions regarding reading habits.

What is your favorite course at Shimer?
Integrative Studies 2, which is on the Nature and Creation of Mathematics, and was taught by David Shiner, is my favorite. (The rest of the natural science core courses follow close behind.) I've always been interested in math and science and this course gave me a greater appreciation for these subjects. We started the course by doing basic logical problems and Euclid and ended it with Einstein and Godel! I also realized, how much I actually enjoyed this subject and that teaching and/or researching math and physics was what I wanted to pursue in life.

What is your favorite Shimer memory?
That's a hard one! I guess I'd have to say that it would be in my Natural Science 3 class where we spent time doing experiments that Newton and Young and others did. It helped me achieve a greater understanding of what light is.

What has been the most beneficial aspect of a Shimer education? There are so many of those. I've always been a very introverted and shy person and Shimer has helped my communication skills, both vocal and written. I've learned to interact better with people and become a better listener and speaker. I feel like I actually learn things here as opposed to merely memorizing them.

What advice would you give to prospective students?
If you enjoy reading and are willing to listen to other people, in addition to sharing your own views, then apply now! You won't regret it!
