Applying for Financial Aid
You can apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. Shimer College can provide computer access and assistance for those who do not otherwise have electronic access.
Applicants should file as soon as possible after January 1 of each year by following these easy steps:
1. Apply for admission to the College.
2. Complete and submit your FAFSA .
3. Remember to include Shimer’s school code (001756) on the FAFSA application. This will allow us to access your information electronically.
4. Based upon your demonstrated financial need, the Office of Financial Aid will put together a package of aid to help pay for your Shimer education. Packages may include scholarships, grants, loans, and/or Federal Work Study. When your aid has been packaged, Director of Financial Aid Janet Henthorn will email you a link to review your financial aid package.
The Financial Aid Package
After the Financial Aid Office receives the Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) generated from your FAFSA, an award notification package will be assembled for you. The financial aid package is determined by your financial need based on college costs and awarded based on the availability of funds. You will receive an email from the Office of Financial Aid explaining your aid package contents which may include scholarships, loans, work or grant assistance, depending upon the amount of need and the types of aid for which you are eligible. The awarded funds will be made available to you prior to registration. If the amount of the award is not sufficient to cover total costs, you must be prepared to pay the remainder at registration. If you have any concerns or questions about your aid package, please do not hesitate to contact the Financial Aid Office.
Reviewing Your Aid Package
When you review your financial aid package, please follow the instructions in the above link to accept or reject your awards. Note that if your award includes loans, you may need to take additional steps. (See our Loans page.)
Renewing Financial Aid
Financial aid is not automatically renewed. Continuing students must reapply for aid each year. Therefore, items should be in the Financial Aid Office by May 1st each year for new and continuing students to receive priority awards. Students delaying past May 1st to
complete their files will be provided aid to the extent that funds are available.
Shimer College will attempt to meet the need of every eligible aid applicant. All awards, however, are contingent upon availability of funds. All financial aid is awarded for legitimate educational costs.
