College of Lake County (CLC)

Students with 60 or more credits may transfer in courses toward the Shimer College Bachelor of Science degree that count for Shimer College’s lower-level (1- and 2-level) Core courses, except for Integrative Studies 2.  Shimer College’s lower-level Core Courses are five-credit courses.  Typically, this means that 2 3-credit CLC courses that count for the Core Courses designated below will be equivalent to one Shimer Core Course, and the remaining credit will be a lower-level elective credit in the Humanities, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences as appropriate. Special Topics Courses and Independent Studies courses may be accepted for Shimer credit. 

The CLC courses eligible to transfer in as Shimer Core Course Equivalences are listed below:

 

HUMANITIES ONE: ART AND MUSIC: two 3-credit courses, one in Art and one in Music.

One course from Art: ART 121; Art 240; Art 241.

One course from Music:  MUS 128; MUS 129; MUS 224; MUS 228: MUS 229.

 

HUMANITIES TWO: POETRY, DRAMA, AND FICTION: one 3-credit course in Composition and one 3-credit course in Literature.  Two 3-credit literature courses may be accepted if there is a substantial writing component in at least one of them.

One composition course from English: ENG 121; ENG 122.

One course in literature from: English: ENG 129, ENG 223; ENG 225; ENG 226; ENG 227; ENG 228; ENG 229; ENG 241; ENG 243; ENG 244; ENG 246; ENG 247; ENG 263; ENG 264.

 

INTEGRATIVE STUDIES TWO: FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS AND LOGIC:No equivalence.

 

NATURAL SCIENCES ONE: LAWS AND MODELS IN CHEMISTRY: One 5-credit course in Chemistry or two 3-credit courses in Chemistry. 

One of the following 5-credit courses from Chemistry: CHM 121, CHM 123, CHM 125, CHM 221, CHM 222, CHM 223; OR two courses from the following list: CHM 120; CHM 140; CHM 142. 

 

NATURAL SCIENCES TWO: EVOLUTION, GENETICS, AND ANIMAL BEHAVIOR:  two 3-credit courses in Biology. 

Two courses from the following list: Anthropology ANT 222; Biology: BIO 123; BIO 127; BIO 141; BIO 149; BIO 161; BIO 162; BIO 221; BIO 222; BIO 244; BIO 245; BIO 246.

 

SOCIAL SCIENCES ONE: SOCIETY, CULTURE AND PERSONALITY:two 3-credit courses in the social sciences: at least one must be introductory; the other must be from a different department.  You must therefore choose one of the following introductory courses: Anthropology 221; Psychology 121; or Sociology 121.  There are three pathways to transfer to Shimer with credit for Social Sciences One.

Pathway One: Take ANT 221.

THEN, choose one course from the following list: Early Childhood Education: ECE 124;  Psychology : PSY 121; PSY 220; PSY 222; PSY 223; PSY 224; PSY 225; PSY 226; PSY 229; Sociology: SOC 121; SOC 222; SOC 223; SOC 224: SOC 225; SOC 229.

Pathway Two: Take PSY 121.

THEN, choose one course from the following list:  Anthropology: ANT 121; ANT 125; ANT 221; ANT228; Sociology: SOC 121; SOC 222; SOC 223; SOC 224: SOC 225; SOC 229. 

Pathway Three: Take SOC 121

THEN, choose one course from the following list: Anthropology: ANT 121; ANT 125; ANT 221; ANT 228; Early Childhood Education: ECE 124; Psychology : PSY 121; PSY 220; PSY 222; PSY 223; PSY 224; PSY 225; PSY 226; PSY 229

 

SOCIAL SCIENCES TWO: THE WESTERN POLITICAL TRADITION:two 3-credit courses in classical political theory and American politics.

Two courses from the following list, one of which must be a course in Political Science: Philosophy: PHI 128; Political Science PSC 121; PSC 122; PSC 221; History: HST 221; HST 222.
