Students with 60 or more credits may transfer in courses toward the Shimer College Bachelor of Science degree that count for Shimer College’s lower-level (1- and 2-level) Core courses, except for Integrative Studies 2.  Shimer College’s lower-level Core Courses are five-credit courses.  Typically, this means that 2 3-credit Cuyahogacourses that count for the Core Courses designated below will be equivalent to one Shimer Core Course, and the remaining credit will be a lower-level elective credit in the Humanities, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences as appropriate. Special Topics Courses and Independent Studies courses may be accepted for Shimer credit. 

The Cuyahoga courses eligible to transfer in as Shimer Core Course Equivalences are listed below:

HUMANITIES ONE: ART AND MUSIC: two 3-credit courses, one in Art and one in Music.

One course from Fine Arts: ART: 1010; 2020; 2030.

One course from Music: MUS 1010; 1210; 1600; 1620; 2500; 2510; 2600; 2620.

HUMANITIES TWO: POETRY, DRAMA, AND FICTION: one 3-credit course in Composition and one 3-credit course in Literature.  Two 3-credit literature courses may be accepted if there is a substantial writing component in at least one of them.

One composition course from English: ENG 1010; 101H; 1020; 102H.

One course from English literature: ENG 2020; 2310; 2320; 2350; 2360; 2410; 2430; 2710; 2730.


NATURAL SCIENCES ONE: LAWS AND MODELS IN CHEMISTRY: two 3-credit courses or one 4-credit course and 1 credit Lab in Chemistry. 

Two courses from Chemistry: CHEM 1010; 101H; 1020; 102H; 1300; 130H; 1310; 131H; 2000; 2300; 2310; 2400; PHIL 2031.


Two courses from the following list: ANTH 1020; BIO 1040; 1050; 1060; 1500; 150H; 1510; 151H; 2060; 2070; 2331; 2341; 2500; PHIL 2031.

Please Note: PHIL 2031 cannot be applied to both NATURAL SCIENCES 1 and NATURAL SCIENCES 2 to fill course requirements. 

SOCIAL SCIENCES ONE: SOCIETY, CULTURE, AND PERSONALITY:  two 3-credit courses in the social sciences: at least one must be introductory; the other must be from a different department.  You must therefore choose one of the following introductory courses: Anthropology 1010; Psychology 1010 or 101H; or, Sociology 1010 or 101H.  There are three pathways to transfer to Shimer with credit for Social Sciences One.

Pathway One: Take ANTH 1010.

THEN, choose one course from the following list: Early Childhood Education: ECED 101B; Psychology: PSY 1010 or 101H; 2010 or 201H; 2020 or 202H;  2040;  2050;  2060;  2070; 2080; 2100; Sociology: SOC 1010 or 101H; 1020; 2010 or 201H;  2020; 2060; 2070; 2100;  2150;  2310; 2410; 2510.

Pathway Two: Take PSY 1010 or 101H.

THEN, choose one course from the following list:  Anthropology: ANTH 1010; 2010;  Early Childhood Education: ECED 101B; Sociology: SOC 1010 or 101H; 1020; 2010 or 201H; 2020; 2060; 2070; 2100; 2150; 2310; 2410; 2510..

Pathway Three: Take SOC 1010 or 101H.

THEN, choose one course from the following list: Anthropology: ANTH 1010; ANTH 2010; Early Childhood Education: ECED 101B; Psychology: PSY 1010 or 101H; 2010 or 201H; 2020 or 202H; 2040; 2050; 2060; 2070; 2080; 2100.

SOCIAL SCIENCES TWO: THE WESTERN POLITICAL TRADITION:  two 3-credit courses in classical political theory and American politics.

Two courses from the following list, one of which must be a course in Political Science: Political Science: POL 1010 or 101H; 2100; 2120; History: HIST 1510 or 151H; 1520 or 152H.
