Shimer College

Application Checklist for First-Time Freshmen

We wouldn’t dare call you a “traditional student.”

  • Completed Shimer College Application: Start your application by clicking here.
  • Official High School Transcripts or the equivalent (such as a GED) are required for admission. Final transcripts as proof of graduation are required for enrollment.
  • College Entrance Examinations (ACT or SAT): In most cases, Shimer College does not require college entrance examinations for admission. However, if they are available, we ask that they be posted on your high school transcript or that you ask the testing agency to forward the results to Shimer.
  • Letter of Recommendation from a teacher who can assess your academic progress and level of readiness for college-level work. These can be mailed or emailed directly from the recommender to
  • Essays or Writing Samples are a very important part of your application. They will be read carefully by the Admission Committee. You may choose to respond to the prompts on the application, elect to submit a portfolio of two or three examples of expository writing of high quality, or a combination of the two. These can be uploaded through the online application or they can be mailed or emailed directly to
  • Job History: Many students have worked outside of school; some may be coming from the full-time workforce to Shimer. If you are applying to the Shimer, we would be interested to know about your work.
  • Application fee of $25 payable to Shimer College.
  • Admission Interviews are usually conducted in person as soon as the college has received your completed application. However, if you are visiting the campus, we will be happy to meet with you at that time. If you are unavailable for a personal interview, arrangements can be made for a telephone interview.
