Shimer: The Great Books College of Chicago

Shimer Students Go Guerrilla -- They’d Like You to Join Them!

Every week this summer, Shimer students will be riding the CTA and surreptitiously posting fliers quoting Wollstonecraft and Hobbes. They'll be inundating Chicago neighborhoods with bookmarks and fliers demonstrating the relationship between present-day events and History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. These students endure the sun and sweat because they love Shimer as you do. They’ve even posted a video of their fledgling efforts on YouTube: Trying to explain Shimer to a guy on the street.

This coming weekend, our students will be giving away temporary tattoos at the Pitchfork and Folk/Roots music festivals; these tattoos match the real tattoo Shimer student Gabe Curio has emblazoned on his arm.Shimer student tattoo

Future plans include street theater and a YouTube video based on the Thucydides text.

Shimer students are turning to such “guerrilla marketing” techniques to attract creative, highly intelligent, curious thinkers. Guerrilla marketing is an advertising tool developed by and for small companies and institutions that need high publicity without high price tags.

The guerrilla-marketing team has one request. They’d like you to do 2-3 hours of guerrilla marketing in your home town.

They'd like to send you a guerrilla-marketing packet, containing Shimer/Thucydides bookmarks as well as fliers to post at cafes, libraries, book/music stores. The packet will also include some ideas for reaching potential Shimer students.

If you are interested, please email Julia Mossbridge, Marketing Consultant and Adjunct Faculty, with your home address. She will make sure you receive a guerrilla marketing packet as soon as humanly possible.

North Carolina Reception for Prospective Shimer Students
Stuart Patterson, Professor of Humanities, will turn his visit to his family in North Carolina into a recruitment event this year. Stuart’s mother Alice, who has worked in higher education for most of her career, has offered to host a student/parent reception at her home on July 15. We have invited four alumni and the nearly 30 fall '08 prospects that live within a two-hour drive of the Patterson home.

Many thanks to the Patterson family for this generous offer!

If you are interested in hosting a prospective student reception in your area, please contact Elaine Vincent, Director of Admission, to discuss the possibilities.

We Want Your Shimer Stories!
Do you have a touching, disturbing, exciting, or just plain strange story about your experiences at Shimer, after Shimer, or being married to/working with a Shimer alum?

If so, and you're willing to share your story, we'd like to hear it. Part of increasing awareness about Shimer College is creating interesting vignettes that could be tailored for use on National Public Radio shows like This American Life and American Public Media shows like The Story.

If you don't think you'd mind our marketing department tailoring your narrative in this way, and if you'd be eager to share your experience with interested listeners across the country, please contact Julia Mossbridge, Marketing Consultant and Adjunct Faculty, with a brief description of your story.

Your continued support and dedication to Shimer College make a huge difference.
