| Unrestricted Bequests: An unrestricted bequest intended for the general purposes of the University, one that the President and Trustees are free to use in whole or part in what they perceive as the best interests of the college, might read as follows: I give (____ dollars/ _____ percent or all of the residue of my estate) to the President and Trustees of Shimer College, for the benefit of ShimerCollege. Restricted bequests: A restricted bequest allows a donor to support a special interest within the college. Bequests for these restricted purposes may be expressed as follows: I give (____ dollars/ _____ percent or all of the residue of my estate) to the President and Trustees of Shimer College, for the benefit of ShimerCollege, to be used for (the library, scholarship, faculty, etc.) Specifies purposes should be described as broadly as possible, avoiding detailed limitations and restrictions. If possible, it would be helpful if Shimer representatives could be advised of the wishes of the donor before the final documents are drawn. Memorial bequests: An unrestricted or restricted bequest may be used to establish a fund in the memory of a relative, classmate, or friend. This can be done by indicating that the fund is to be established and named in memory of the person or persons to be honored. The bequest can take the form of a book fund, scholarship fund, endowed professorship or other designation preferred by the donor. |
