August Lysy ’15 assisted a director and literary manager
Taking a year between high school and Shimer to do City Year may have been the best idea of my life. One experience gave me a real-world view of inequality, and the other gave me the power and knowledge to be able to change it.
This summer I participated in the Chicago-Kent College of Law Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) program at Chicago-Kent’s downtown campus.
At Benton House, I find myself part of an experiment of democracy that embodies the ideas of “social democracy.” The organizational structure is not totally unlike Shimer itself, and I find the overlaps to be compelling.
This winter has been, by all reports, significantly harsher than the average winter in Chicago. My first exposure to winter in Chicago was last year, which mistakenly lead me to believe that all the long underwear I had purchased in anticipation of my move here was a bit of a waste. Sure, I needed some of it but not nearly as much as I had on hand.
Netiya Shiner and Maria Gomez are Shimer students participating in the Shimer Internship/Mentorship (SIM) Program. They regularly post updates about their internship experiences.
This post is from Netiya, who is interning with the Illinois Choice Action Team.
