Is it a cliché to suggest our favorite local bookstores?

Maybe. But here are a few.

Powell’s: Two nearby locations, one in University Village and one in Hyde Park.

O’Gara and Wilson: A short drive over state lines, but home to the best old maps, antique photos, and out-of-print books in the Midwest.

Abraham Lincoln Bookshop: Historical Americana and amazing old-book smells.

Seminary Co-op Bookstore: Some mourn its move out of the basement of the Chicago Theological Seminary, but we like not hitting our heads on the tennis-ball-covered ceiling pipes at the new above-ground location. It still offers 120,000 titles in the humanities and social sciences, arguably the largest such inventory in the United States.
