Shimer College

December 03, 2013

Are you a first-generation college student or a first-generation college graduate?

Be part of the “I’m First” stories project!

Join President Susan Henking in submitting a short video to the Center for Student Opportunity’s “I’m First” stories project. Sharing your story with aspiring first-generation college students helps encourage others like you to pursue their dreams and helps negate any messages they are receiving that they can’t or don’t deserve to go to collage.

Of course in addition to supporting other first-generation college students, sharing your story helps put the Shimer name into a very public conversation. News about I’m First recently aired on NPR’s Marketplace Morning Report, so this is a great opportunity to raise Shimer’s profile.

Instruction and Tips

Prepare your message.
Begin your video with “My name is ______ and I’m first!” Then tell your story and offer some advice for students who will be the first generation in their family to go to college. You may wish to write down some thoughts to prepare. Be sure to mention Shimer in your message.

Make sure we can hear you.
We want to hear what you have to say! Pick a quiet place to make your video. Speak clearly and project your voice.

Make sure we can see you.
Light should be on your face and not behind it — i.e. don’t sit in front of a bright window. If you like, wear a Shimer t-shirt or sweatshirt.

Record your video and upload to YouTube.
Use your webcam or smartphone to record the video. Please keep your video under three (3) minutes in length. To upload your video, sign in to YouTube or create an account.

Add a title and tags.
Title your video “I’m First” and include your first name and location – for example: “I’m First: James at Shimer College in Chicago, IL.” Include a short description about yourself and your video and use tags to describe your video so that other people can find it. Some tags to include are Shimer, Shimer College, firstgen, imfirst, college, center for student opportunity, cso.

License your content.
When you upload your video to YouTube, select “Creative Commons – Attribution” under “License and rights ownership.” This will allow us and our partners to share your video.

Add your video to the I’m First site and the Shimer site.

You can submit the video to the I’m First site by clicking here. Be sure to also share it with Shimer here. Submitting your video to Shimer counts towards points for website contributions challenge.

Have fun, and thanks for participating!
