Steven Werlin, former Dean of the College, appointed Shimer College Coordinator of International Educational Outreach
Steven Werlin, former Dean of the College (2001-2004), leaves Waukegan in January, 2005 to pursue work as ShimerCollege’s Coordinator of International Educational Outreach. Werlin will be based in Haiti, where Shimer staff members have been working since 1997, collaborating with Haitian educators to develop the kind of teaching-through-conversation that Shimer is known for. This appointment is under the auspices of The Robert M. Hutchins Institute for Educational Excellence, which hosts ShimerCollege’s non-degree educational programs that foster life-long learning. Werlin has been a member of the Shimer faculty since 1996.
Werlin will live in Ka Glo, a small rural village overlooking the capital, Port au Prince. His main tasks this spring will be to teach three classes: one on Paulo Freire and critical pedagogy at the University of Fondwa, another on Jean Piaget and developmental psychology at The Matenwa Community Learning Center, and a third on classics in French literature and philosophy to high school seniors in Léogane.
