NEW MEMBERS ELECTED TO
SHIMER COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Shimer College is pleased to welcome its newest members to the Board of Trustees. These members bring with them a knowledge, passion, and commitment to Shimer College and the Great Books. They also bring a wealth of experience in education and business, as well as ties to the Chicago business community that will be of great benefit to the College.

“I am looking forward to working with the new members of the Board to help continue to build and grow Shimer. I believe their experience and ties to the business and educational communities, along with their deep commitment to Shimer will be invaluable,” says Sally Brown, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Barry Carroll
Barry Carroll is a graduate of the class of 1966 and has been welcomed back to the Board of Trustees after serving on the Board for the majority of the past 40 years, including serving as Chair of the Board in the late 70’s. After graduating from Shimer, Barry went on to obtain an MBA from Harvard University and currently serves as President and Chairman of the Board of Carroll International Corporation, a metals manufacturing company in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Kathleen Chappell
Kate Chappell, a 1976 graduate of Shimer, is today the Chief Development Officer for Ada S. McKinley Community Services, Inc. in Chicago. She also holds graduate degrees from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and Chicago-Kent College of Law. For over 25 years, Kate has worked in advancement for universities and non-profits, including at SIUE, the St. Louis Bi-State Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Illinois Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Chicago Youth Centers.

Peter Hanig
Peter Hanig is a 1971 graduate of Shimer. He has previous served on the Board of Trustees and is currently the President of Hanig’s Footwear, which has six stores in the Chicagoland area. He has deep ties within the Chicago business and philanthropic communities. Peter is a past board member for the Chicago Convention and Tourism Board and National Shoe Retailers Association, and he is currently a member of the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association, Chicago Department of Business Affairs, and the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs in Chicago.

Sandra (Schmidt) Hockenbury
Sandy Hockenbury graduated from Shimer in 1974 and went on to graduate school at The University of Chicago where she received a Masters in English Language and Literature. She is an author and presenter in the field of psychology, having co-authored two introductory psychology textbooks and supplements that are currently in use at over 400 colleges and universities nationwide. Sandy is also a member of the Association of Psychological Science, the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Mary Lou Kennedy
Mary Lou Kennedy is a 1974 graduate of Shimer who was recently welcomed back to the Board of Trustees. After Shimer, Mary Lou went on to obtain a law degree from Northern Illinois University, and she currently serves as Vice President and Senior National Counsel at First American Title Insurance Company.

Robert Keohane
Robert Keohane is the son of two former Shimer professors, an early entrant, and a 1961 graduate of Shimer. He is currently a professor of International Relations at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He earned his Master’s and Ph.D. from Harvard University and has previously taught at Swarthmore College, Stanford University, Brandeis University, Harvard University, and Duke University. Robert is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Political and Social Science and American Philosophical Society.

Linda Levy
Linda Levy was an early entrant and a member of the last class to graduate from Shimer at the Mount Carroll campus in 1978. Today, she is a sales representative for a publishing company and an advertising salesperson for The Workbook, an annually produced sourcebook. The Workbook is distributed worldwide to those working in advertising agencies, design studios, in-house corporate marketing departments, publishing companies, and freelance art buyers.

Shimer College is also pleased to welcome the newest student and faculty representatives to the Board of Trustees. These members were chosen by the constituencies they represent.

Barbara Stone
Barbara Stone has been a member of the Shimer faculty since 1985 and was recently selected by the faculty to be their newest representative on the Board of Trustees. Barb has a Ph.D. in German Language and Literature from Northwestern University and regularly teaches in the humanities and social sciences core.

Erik Boneff
Erik Boneff, a member of Shimer’s class of 2012, was elected as a representative to the Board of Trustees by the weekday students. Originally from Royal Oak, Michigan, Erik hopes to someday enter a graduate program in philosophy and become a professor.

Taylor Buck
Taylor Buck will graduate this spring from Shimer with a concentration in Social Sciences and was elected as a representative to the Board of Trustees by the weekday students. Originally from Tacoma, Washington, she currently works as a case manager with Deborah’s Place in Chicago and plans to attend graduate school after Shimer.

Timothy Eident
Timothy Eident is a weekend student expected to graduate in 2013, and he was recently elected as a representative to the Board of Trustees by the weekend students. When not preparing for his Shimer classes, Tim works as an assistant manager at a restaurant and is a writer and board member of Broad Shoulders Productions.

Shimer College, the Great Books College of Chicago, provides a liberal education in a setting of small seminar-style classes where students read and discuss the original works of history’s greatest thinkers.
