At Shimer, we’re a very small, close-knit community.

imageThe Office of Student Life serves as a catalyst in the construction and maintenance of an intentional, challenging, and facilitative learning environment at Shimer College. The Office of Student Life supports the academic mission, history, traditions, and community-based focus of Shimer College. The Office of Student Life partners with the entire Shimer community, IIT and VanderCook School of Music campus communities, and the local community to enhance the curricular and co-curricular experiences of Shimer students. The Office of Student Life accomplishes its mission and supports Shimer’s institutional goals by providing the following services and resources listed below.

Shimer Traditions include: Orange Horse (biannual variety and open mic night), Solidarity (a end-of-the-semester get-together to celebrate our community), Theater Presentations every semester, and Writing Week Tea.

All in the Timing Play - Fall 2015But we also have the advantage of sharing a campus with IIT, which enables us to provide a wide range of services designed to support and enhance each student’s academic experience.

Clubs: Shimer students can participate, propose, and lead IIT clubs. Recent favorites have included Tech News editing, Hillel, Feminists United, GLAM (Gays, Lesbians, Allies, and More), Rock Climbing, and Cycling.

Disability Services: The College strives to accommodate applicants and students with disabilities on an individual basis and to ensure that all disabled students have full access to the benefits of the university. As such, Shimer will engage in a good faith, interactive process with all disabled students to attempt to identify reasonable accommodations. Students wishing to request accommodations should contact the Dean of the College or the Office of Student Life.

Career Services:  Shimer students can meet with a career coach, open a Jobs4Hawks account (IIT’s online database for resume posting and job listings), or do career/graduate school planning with Shimer College Office of Student Life Personnel.

Student service fees also provide Shimer students with wireless computer access anywhere on the IIT campus, as well as printing capability at student computer areas.
