Shimer College

Office of Student Life

At Shimer, we’re a very small, close-knit community.

That means we’re able to offer a kind of personal support that is rare in higher education settings. Shimer’s Office of Student Life provides activities and services in the areas of programming, community development, career development, service learning, education and leadership development, personal development, information and referral, student conduct, advocacy, orientation, and support services.

Our traditional events include Orange Horse (biannual variety and open mic night), Solidarity (a end-of-the-semester get-together to celebrate our community), and Writing Week Tea.

But we also have the advantage of sharing a campus with IIT, which enables us to provide a wide range of services designed to support and enhance each student’s academic experience.

Career Services: last year, our student representative to IIT, Nate Wright ’14, worked to strengthen the liaison between Shimer and the IIT Career Management Center (Room 111 in Hermann Hall).  The purpose of the CMC is to help develop skills related to finding and applying for a job (resume writing, mock interviews). The Center also hosts career fairs with companies interested in hiring.

Clubs: Shimer students can participate, propose, and lead IIT clubs. Recent favorites have included Tech News editing, Hillel, Feminists United, GLAM (Gays, Lesbians, Allies, and More), Rock Climbing, and Cycling.

Disability Services: The College strives to accommodate applicants and students with disabilities on an individual basis and to ensure that all disabled students have full access to the benefits of the university. As such, Shimer will engage in a good faith, interactive process with all disabled students to attempt to identify reasonable accommodations. Students wishing to request accommodations should contact the Dean of the College or the Office of Student Life.

Women’s Services: Shimer, IIT, and organizations in Chicago offer women (and families) programming and support.

Other IIT services to which Shimer students have full access include:

Counseling Center Health Services Galvin Library
Keating Recreational Center Student Center for Inclusion & Diversity Leadership Academy

Office of Spirituality & Service Learning

Shuttle Service Public Safety

Student service fees also provide Shimer students with wireless computer access anywhere on the IIT campus, as well as printing capability at student computer areas.
