The Name
The Society is named after the Hostetter family, Elizabeth (left) and A. Beth (right) who made a great impact on Shimer.

Elizabeth Hostetter           A. Beth Hostetter

Elizabeth Hostetter came to Shimer as a student in the 1860s and worked with the College throughout the early years; Frances Shimer named her to the original Board of Trustees.

Her daughter, A. Beth Hostetter also attended Shimer and returned to teach in 1903. A. Beth was active at Shimer for the next 60 years, serving as Dean of the College for over 20 years and acting as President on multiple occasions. She was also an officer of the first Alumni Association formed in the 30’s.

The Hostetters left a legacy of service to Shimer College. They committed their time, love, and care to Shimer and its students for nearly a century.
